Paper clay is pressed with the marks of crocheted granny squares and attached together with thread. Each square is 5 in x 5 in, and together they make a quilt, alluding to women's manual work and family traditions.

Santos' grandmother, Aurora, washed clothes and crocheted to supplement the household income. She made one quilt for each of her granddaughters. The artist was the youngest, and by the time her quilt was made, her grandmother was already in her late 80s. The squares are uneven and mismatched. However, the quilt shows the passage of time and love in preserving family traditions.

Granny Square Clay Quilt was made by the hands of the artist and her family, who together sculpted more than 150 squares for the project.
